OPOKU
The blue alludes to the Gambian river, witch is the country’s key feature and is where the country derives it’s name from. the blue net represents the fishing in the region, and the hardship the people of this occupation faces. The red evokes the sun- given the Gambia’s close proximity to the equator- as well as the savanna. The white shells represents the damage of the environment while the thin white stripes reprice the “peace and unity”. The green epitomizes the forest and the agricultural goods that the gambian people are heavily dependent on, both for exports and their personal use.

“Opoku” started from a desire i had to dedicate a collection to my west african roots. “Opoku” developed into a strong and empowering collection that powers the strong women. It mixes oversize suits, sophisticated cuts and all bright colors. which represents the colors of the Gambian flag. The colors carry cultural, political and regional meanings. The name Opoku means fighter. The word fighter represents for me the hardship a young immigrant from africa faces in europe. If they either make it in Europe, or return as a "failure"

“Opoku” further represents one of the most inspiring people i know. He has always been the most confident person . and he dresses effortlessly in clothing that some may think is over the top. But he never cared about what anybody else thought about it. I was 12 or 13 years old when i told him i wanted to become a fashion designer, an idea that was supported to the fullest from his side. And since that day i promised i would name my collection after him. so thank you Fredrik Opoku
